Self-critique and Reflection

I had previously arranged for an assistant to help me on the day, who dropped out the night before the assesment. I'd almost convinced myself that i'd be able to do the makeups without help when I managed for find someone else to assist me. It only became apparent on the day just how badly I needed that assistant - if I hadn't found her the night before, I know i would have completely failed my assesment, as I estimate it would only have been 70% finished. I managed to do all the main parts of the makeup (prosthetic application, prepping the hair and applying the wig) but without her there would have been significant gaps in my work and it would have looked a mess. She painted the larger areas with PAX paint, stippled over the edges of the bald cap with more latex so that it was more secure and helped put a base makeup on for the geisha. I have learnt that just like the prosthetic making process, always over-estimate how long everything will take, as you need to allow room for mistakes.

I had also asked for 3 hours for my assesment time, which wasn't enough. Fortunately my assesor recognised my mistake and allowed me another 30 minutes, which helped immensley with finishing the makeups. Without that I would have been really upset with my finished makeups.

Sadly I hadn't tried the kimono on Akane before the assesment. Only when it came to painting the pattern on the back of the neck did I realise there was no room, as the kimono came all the way to the top of her neck. So sadly I had to leave this part oft the makeup out.

I also forgot to apply wig cap under the wig which I think could have helped a lot with my model's stray baby hairs. I am very proud of the way I styled the wig, but I really hadn't knotted quite far forward enough and so gluing the wig down was difficult, as I had to try and glue over some of her baby hairs which meant it didn't stick quite as effectively.

I also forgot to apply gowns to my models which is a very naive mistake and it would've prevented the costumes from being damaged so i'm really annoyed at myself for forgetting this.

I was immensley disappointed with the shape, size and fit of the bald cap. Even after I added more liquid latex to it, making it as large as I could on the red head, it was too small in some areas, yet baggy in others and overall a total mess. I think in future if my model has a bigger head, I eaither need to buy another, bigger red head or maybe do a full head cast and then see if I could make the bald cap from their fibreglass lifecast. That would ensure a definite fit.

I was happy with the prosthetics from a distance, but the edges were bad. If i'd allowed myself more time (and done more research prior to the assesment) then I could have blended the edges much effectivley.

The hands and nails were the best part of the Fujin makeup. They fit really well and the nails gave a really nice silhouette. However, because I hadn't researched the possibility of no-tack pros-aide before the assesment and used normal pros-aide, the fingers kept sticking together, messing up the thin edges. I know that more practise and research would have made a huge improvement overall

I think overall my techicalities and research let me down and I was really disappointed with my assesment on the day.
