Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief
The Percy Jackson films tell the story of a demi-god Percy, who is the son of a woman and Poseiden. It is quite a modern take on the themes of the Greek Gods/Goddesses, for example, in the second film, the demi-god son of Hermes has winged Converse, as apposed to traditional Greek footwear, or wings attatched to his feet. The Gods, Goddesses and demi-gods are nearly all human in stature, apart from any mythical beasts, satyrs or minotaurs. Their qualities are represented through their powers as apposed to their appearance, for example Percy can hold his breath underwater for a long time and control the seas, but he has no scales or blue colouring in his clothing, etc. Hades however, can transform into a satan-like fiery demon creature, but all the 'good' Gods and Goddesses are shown to be very groomed and attractive, almost like the epitome of masculine or feminine. For instance, Persephone has long, thick, curly brown hair, curvaceous figure with a suggestive outfit. She has beauty makeup which enhances her naturally good-looking features. Poseiden had no physical attributes that represented water, but his armour had scales patterned on it.
I'm not a fan of this overly modern take on these legends. Although my scene will be interpreted, I don't really want to bring it into the 21st century.

Thor depicts the battle between the Norse Gods and Goddesses of Asgard against the Frost giants.
Much like the Percy Jackson films, Thor also represented the deities through their powers rather than physical appearances, although they definately cast actors with physical traits that represented their characters. The film depicts the Norse Gods, Thor being the God of lightening, thunder and strength and also the protangonist of the film. This is reprented in the actors physical appearance by him being very tall and muscular. His long blonde hair and stubble has connotations of masculinity and strength, synonymous with a lions mane. Whereas his brother, Loki; the protagonist trickster is very pale, with slicked back dark hair and is quite slender in comparison which gives him an overall sinister appearance.
The characters qualitites are also depicted through their outfits, with Loki and the gatekeeper both having large, helmets with protruding shapes showing their importance.
Like the most of the other films there were no obvious feature-changeing prosthetics used on people. The only fantastical elements were the CGI mythical creatures.
This film also demonstrates human interaction with Gods/Goddesses, which is something I plan to include in my film clip. The general reaction from the humans is a little surprise initially, and unsurity as to how to react to his mannerisms and actions but then friendship. I imagine my scene very different to this, as my human-like character will be aware of the Fujin and will probably have been sent as sacrafice so there will be a lot of fear and tension.

Film Context
As my character is going to be for film context, I tried to watch as many films featuring deities as possible. There are many more I could have watched, such as the Narnia films, but I felt that they depict more animalistic myths that aren't as relevant to my project as the ones I have chosen to look at. This way I could see how deities were represented in films, how any powers the had were portrayed as well as how they interact with other characters. This has given me more contect and ideas for how to portray my character. I also now have some idea as to how to shoot my character, with angles and lighting to portray him in a powerful light.

Clash of Titans. 2010. [DVD] Louis Letterier USA: Warner Bros.
Notes from the film:
- Before Gods and man there were Titans
- Then came Zeus, Poseidon and Hades. Their immortality is fuelled by human prayers
- Hades wreaks havoc upon the humans as they become restless of praying to the Gods and being treated unfairly
- Perseus' family die after some soldiers destroy a statue of Poseidon and he is taken to Argos. Perseus is a demi-God
- Hades threatens to release the Kraken unless the people of Argos sacrifice their princess to the Gods. He also ages the queen for her insolence
- Hades plans to overpower and kill Zeus by having someone kill Perseus and then summons giant scorpions in the desert
- Perseus and crew befriend people who control scorpions, who are very old, mummy-like creatures....
- Perseus and crew then go and see some witches who tell them that Medusa can kill the Kraken
- He cuts of Medusa's head and shows it to the Kraken just before it destroys Argos and the princess.
- Perseus's soldier companions had leathery, Roman-style clothing and often long, braided hair.
Much like Thor, the actors chosen for their parts had attributes that represented their characters which were enhanced with makeup and special effects. Hades was once again the most enhanced, and was pale with long black hair and ghoulish makeup, drawing upon similar preconceptions to Loki as to what is aesthetically evil-looking.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters
Percy Jackson; Sea of Monsters 2013 [DVD] Thor Freudenthal. USA
I didn't find the Hellboy films overly relevant to my topic, especially not from a story/script point of view, although I did find the Angel of Death's makeup, by Joe Nazzaro, really intriguing. I think dispelling of the character's eyes and yet having the character as all-knowing in a omnipotent sense gives it a eleviated god-like status. The eyes in the wings almost seem like accessories rather than a necessity, and is something I've never seen before. I believe the texture Joe Nazarro was trying to create in the face was like cracked wood, which I think elecites connotations of age, wisdom and sturdyness which are all qualities of a deity, The shape of the top of the head is also really unique, also in-keeping with the shape of a tree-trunk and yet somehow, crown-like in its appearance. Its size also makes the creature seem more dominant and all-knowing.
Doug Jones added a lot to the character, giving it a sinister, whisper of a voice, similar to to the voice of Voldemort, ghost-like. He didn't move much, people moved around him which I think is another representation of his dominance, but also his age and tree-like qualities.
I learnt a lot about representation from this character and also how to animate my character thorugh outlets like stance and voice.
Joe Nazzaro Web Exclusive: Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, The Angel of Death. Makeup Artist Magazine(2008) [online] Available from:https://makeupmag.com/web-exclusive-hellboy-2-the-golden-army-the-angel-of-death-2/ [Accessed: April 4th 2015]
One of the most unforgettable creatures in Hellboy 2 is the Angel of Death, a towering monstrosity (played by Doug Jones) whose eyes are embedded in a pair of wings. The character was created by concept artist Wayne Barlowe and designed and built by Norman Cabrera, with input from director Guillermo del Toro.
As Cabrera recalled, “Guillermo had a meeting with some of the key people at Spectral Motion, myself included, where he said, ‘I want you to come with some wild stuff. I don’t want to see familiar things I’ve seen in other movies.’ For this character, he basically said, ‘Think of every angel of death you’ve ever seen and don’t do that! Do something really out there and bizarre.’
Norman Cabrera paints eyes for the wings
“Once we decided on a direction, I sculpted a maquette of the Angel. Right off the bat, I did this ornamental-looking stuff on his chest that sort of looked like faces and Guillermo was sold on that, but the face was more of a challenge because he didn’t want any eyes. I started with stuff that had more bone shape to it and Guillermo didn’t even want empty sockets; he just wanted it to be blank. I did one version of the head and he said, ‘Do you mind if I mess around with this a little bit?’ and smushed the eyes down into a really weird flattened-out shape. At first, I couldn’t totally wrap my head around it, but after I started playing with it, it all came together.”
The task of creating the complex dual set of wings was overseen by electronic wizard Mark Setrakian. “I got the ball rolling, but when I left for Budapest, the people who finished it were Bud McGrew, Scott Millenbaugh and Fred Frehley who really made it happen. When I saw the design I thought, ‘This is going to require an interesting joint mechanism!’ so I came up with a series of what I call ‘gear hinges,’ which are similar to the way a human knee works. That allowed me to fold these wings up very tight, but it was a fairly complicated arrangement.
Rob Capwell working on the wings
“The other problem was all these eyes, because they were in the middle of where the structure of the wing should be, so the structure itself had to be open in the center for the eyes to lay in, and that’s a lot of mechanisms. And finally, the orientation of the eyes actually changed as the wings opened and closed, so when the wings are folded, we’ve got some eyes that are looking left and right. When the wings open, the ones on the lower part of the wing have now turned completely upside down but they still needed to look left and right in synch with the rest of them.”
Looking back at his work on the character, Cabrera is delighted with the response. “One of the things Guillermo said when the Angel was all designed was, ‘Cabrera, the Angel of Death will be in Hellboy 3!’ so I hope that’s true.”
Spirited Away. 2001 [DVD] Hayao Miyazaki Japan: Tokuma Shoten
I would really have liked to watch a Japanese film featuring Japanese deitites, but sadly I couldn't find any films featuring specific Japanese myths. THe studio Gibli films feature a lot of spirits and ghosts but no specific gods that I could research.
Spirited away features the story of a young girl who becomes lost in a town where she sells her name for a job in a bath house and meets many different spirits. She befriends a boy named Haku who can turn into a dragon. There is also a river spirit who has a kind of oni-like mask. There is also a character called no-face who has a very simple mask for a face which looks a lot like traditional Japanese theatre dance masks which I have read about.
There didn't seem to be many rules as far as the plot was concerned but it all made total sense in that kind of setting and realm. It's made me wonder whether I might like to include some more fantastical elements in my clip.
Princess Monoke. 1997 [DVD] Hayao Miyazaki. Japan
This film actually features a Forrest God and a Boar God which are both forces of the forrest in its battle against the humans, lead by Princess Mononoke. The Forrest God is basically a deer, which can transform into a huge, ghost-like glowing creature. The Boar is essentially a large, white, tusked boar which can allso shape-shift into a bizarre creature, which looks like its made up from loads of red string or maybe muscle..... Again, the film makes sense within is realm, but doesn't follow any kind of traditional boundaries other than those created by the Studio Ghibli company.
The Pale Man is presented as a mythological, fantastical being and is actually based on Japanese legend. Tenome was a blind man who was beaten up and murdered by a mugger. He returned as a ghost, but his desire for revenge was so great that his blind eyes were gone, and instead, he grew new eyes in his hands. I can see now how fantastical Japanese legends have influenced current Japanese anime films (below).
This is the only example i'm aware of where a Japanese legend of some kind has been brought to life through prosthetic makeup by David Marti and Montse Ribe. The sagging skin was apparently inspired by Del Toro himself after he lost a large amount of weight. I couldn't find much more description of Tenome's appearance. Literally translated in means 'eyes in hands'. I think it's an amazing depiction and certainly is within the realm of bizarre/fatastical/Japanese influence.

Onibaba
Onibaba 1964 [DVD] Kaneto Shindo. Japan
Onibaba 1962 [DVD] Japan
A poor woman encounters a samuri wearing a strange mask. Onibaba is Japanese for 'grandma-monster', and this is one of the only films I could find featuring some kind of Oni mask. As this film also covers the horror genre, this shows how Oni were used to scare people. Like the other films, it features themes of war and violence but also like the anime films, it seems in a strange realm of its own. The angles used to show the dominance of the Onibaba have given me ideas with regards to filming my own deity.
This war film is based in 15th century Japan. It has a complex plot (that has been criticically compared to shakespeare) and is a very long film, but incredibly colourful with very interesting compostion. I'd putforth the idea that a lot of the makeup choices are influenced by kabuki theatre makeup for a dramatic and traditional impact.
Battle Royale is a dark and twisted film that pertains to Japan's love of the sinister. It has a very dark colour scheme and adheres to the horror genre, with no gods or fantasy elements. This film is one of the most well-known recent japanes films to be produced, and although not all that relevant to my project, it has given me perspective on modern japanese cinema.
This film displayed a lot of powder-dynamics between the young girl and the monsters that inhabit the world she is lost in. This is represented a lot in the shots used, as they aim to show the dominance excerted over her by the monsters. I would like to create a similar dynamic in my piece between the 2 characters.
This book demonstrates this and the drawings have given me some good ideas for shots and how to arrange the filming of my piece.
This book had some really nice initial sketch concepts for the gods and how they develop in the film. It also had some really helpful images of storyboarding which I think would be a good way for me to plan how to film my piece, as I don't know much about cinematography.
