Photoshop is something i've never really used or experimented with before so I had no idea how to use it or what the tools did. But I think I've learnt some basic tools that could be useful for this project and for designing in the future.

  • CMD + or =      to zoom in and out

  • filter, liquify       to distort and image

  • Edit, define brush, preset      when you upload a saved image you can make it a brush

  • The dodge tool      can be used for teeth lightening (or darkening)

  • Blurry tool      Can be used to colour the eyes and then changed with the opacity tool

  • Select image, image rotation      To flip an image (like eyelashed where symmetry is required

Using Photoshop....

I has no idea about the importance of working in layers which allows you to work on idividual things without affecting the whole image. For example, I created a new layer for the eyes, I then did a blob of purple on each iris with a circular brush, changed the opacity and went around it with an eraser tool. Because I had only selected that layer, it allowed me to erase just the purple, and not the rest of the image.

I also learned how to make my own brushes which is a great way to add fake eyelashes, and here I used them to add horns. I uploaded the image in a new layer then clicked edit, define brush, preset. The image is then cropped and saved as a new brush.

Overall I just did some contouring and highlighting with some bruhes, changed the eyecolour and made and used my own horn brush. Even though its not particularly realistic or refined, I found it an interesting learning curve and it's made me more open to the idea of editing and designing on a computer as apposed to traditional materials.

Photoshopping my Model

After learning some photoshop basics, I decided to see if they could aid my design process by trying them out with my model and portrait. I used the magic wand tool to select the moustache, then copy and paste it onto my models face. This taught me about selecting and deselecting sections with the magic wand tool which was useful. However, I had difficulty with this because of the layers, and selecting the right image and resizing the images so that the moustache was the right scale on my model. Obviously the moustache is at a different angle to my model, but it gives me a good idea of scale and shape. I also used the liquify tool to distort his nose, creating the bump that my portrait has in the bridge of the nose.
