"Despite production difficulties and an inane departure from the original Curt Siodmak story, Rick Baker won his seventh Academy Award for his makeup, turning Benicio Del Toro's Lawrence Talbot and his stunt doubles into the wolf man. "

I think wherewolves are one of the most common human-to-animal transformations typically seen in films and TV. They're certainly an animal/human hybrid of sorts and are executed in various ways, the most common being that the person transforms into a wolf when a full moon occurs.

However, I find that the finished transformation is ever a complete wolf. There is typically some kind of human form retained, in that they're larger than a wolf or on standing on their hind legs (with the exeption of the Twilight films).

I also imagine that the particular wolf's design is specific to its genre and character.

For example, Teen Wolf (1985) is a rom-com, so the makeup isn't going to be scary and realistic. The hair is anatomically too long and he doesn't have any kind of muzzle so his good looks are retained. Whereas with Professer Lupin in Harry Potter he is meant to be a realistic wherewold, but at the same time, you are intended to feel sorry for the character, so instead of being large and muscular, he is hunched, slender and sorrowful.

This has actually made me aware that I should maybe be considering any potential character traits I want any of my makeups to have and how detailing can influence the affect of a character.
