Professional Identity

Showreel
I found that looking at this showreel will not only help me assess my potential industry competition, but the standard to which my images for my showreel should be.
I hadn't, for instance, thought of inserting a clip of me applying any makeups, but on reflection this could be a good idea.

This showreel represents 6 makeups, 5 films and one photographed makeup in that order. I feel some of the clips went on for slightly too long, as I found myself waiting to see the next makeup, though this maybe because it was video followed by video five times with no photos to break it up. The music was pleasant and was not dischordant to the visuals. Considering she is marketing herself as a prosthetic makeup artist, I do not think there was enough prosthetic work involved.

I had thought Emma's showreel was good, but then I saw this one which highlighted a lot of flaws for me. Firstly the music in this was a lot more dramatic and inspiring, which I can imagine would had an effect on the viewer. This concurred well with the pace that the images were presented, which was quicker then Emma's and more effective. This also meant that more work was shown, as well as the creative process behind the makeup, which showcases a broader range of skills. The ending in particular, showing the process leading up to and then showing the final makeup was a nice touch. I would consider this a much more effective showreel for a prosthetic makeup artist.
Should it be embedded in my website?
I think the showreel is a much quicker and effective way to see my work than watching individual videos and scrolling through lots of images, as this will essentially show the highlights of my work. I would like it to be a cental feature in my website.
Also in most of the graduates websites I looked at, those studying prosthetics had embedded their showreel onto their website.
Music

I don't think i'll really know what kind of music I want for my showreel until i've compiled the video, as the music should compliment the visual, not the other way around.
A lot of the music i've listened to, whilst nice, is a little too ambient. I want something slightly more dramatic with a beat to build up so my showreel has some kind of climax and energy to it.
Although this has more of a steady beat, I want something more dramatic with a more inspiring rhythm behind it.
I started looking at the different genres available on the website to tailor the options to more of what I wanted. I tried the electronic catergories as well as hip-hop for something with more of a beat.

Although I'm not very pleased with my prosthetic makeup for this film (from my second year project), I will include a clip because of the wig work. I think the photos better show the makeups off, but a short clip will help add context also.

Although I cannot upload the video to this site, a film I recently worked on called Symptoms will be featured in my showreel, as it features sore prosthetics which are obviously featured.

Although I would like to include more videos, I think the above 2 are the only ones I would currently consider using. Hopefully in my upcoming projects I will be able to film some time lapse videos and more professional images to include in my showreel. In the mean time, these are some other images I could consider using.

Having now completed SP, I now have several more images I will be including in my showreel, which I have gone into detail about on my portfolio page. On thing I liked in particular about Kelly Monk's showreel was the showing of the process from the start to finish from her final makeup. I certainly plan on doing this for my Major Project, as well as filming processes such as lifecasting, makeup applications and fibreglassing to show off additional skills.

Because a lot of the recent grad films I worked on are still in their editing stages,I couldn't include a lot of the footage I would have liked to. I decided against using the footage from my second year project, as that standard of the makup wasn't high enough for my showreel. I included a photo of it though, as the makeup problems aren't as apparent in the image. I managed to include a short clip of the cactus man makeup which is good, as the panel gave me good feedback about that in my interview.
I found working with iMovie really easy for the most part. I used transitions to my advantage, such as the ending image where my logo is predominantly white so I used a fade to white transition for a smoother effect. I also grouped any relevent work together so that photos of the same project followed eachother.

The only difficulty I had using iMovie was with adding headings, but after researching how to use them I overcame this issue.
